My YouTube channel isn't monetized!

The other day I posted a Tweet and it created a bit of interest and conversation.

YouTube displays ads before my videos. I don't earn any money from those ads because my YouTube channel is not monetized!

The ads you see on my videos are benefiting the advertiser and YouTube, not me.

How do you get monetized by YouTube?

There are a couple of ways you can earn money on YouTube, to earn money from ads that are played before/during your videos you need to have 1,000 subscribers and have at least 4,000 watch hours in the last 365 days.

Subscribers is fairly self-explanatory. And I've surpassed that milestone, I have 3,207. And I'm grateful to everyone who has hit that subscribe button.

The other requirement to get monetized is watch hours. These are calculated over a 12-month period. So over the course of a year, you need people to have watched at least 4,000 hours of your videos. It doesn't need to be new videos they watch, any (public) video on your channel that folk watch counts towards the watch time.

This is the criteria I have not made yet.

I make YouTube content in my spare time

My YouTube channel isn't a work activity. I do it in my own time. I use my own equipment, and my own resources to create videos.

My work don't pay for me to create content on my YouTube channel. I create YouTube content for the work's channel during work hours, but nothing I do on my own channel is supported by my work.

How can you support me?

There are a few things you can do that will help me which won't cost you anything:

  1. Watch my videos. Watch them in their entirety. Help rack up those watch hours. Each minute, every 5 minutes, each 10 minutes you watch adds up.
  2. Like. If you watch a video and enjoy it, hit the like button. It's a simple action, but it not only shows me the content folk like but also helps YouTube understand the content that is useful to their viewers.
  3. Share. Again if you've watched a video and liked it, share it on your social media. Help others find my content and channel. Again it really helps YouTube to understand what content is useful and encourages them to show it to others.

Did you know when a channel is monetized they can remove ads altogether?

One thing I don't think a lot of people understand is once a channel has reached the 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hour mark. They can actually turn of ads altogether.

No adverts will be displayed before, during or after your videos. Giving viewers an ad-free experience.

Now of course this means you aren't earning any money but it's a great way of helping your viewers get that ad-free experience.

Some videos to watch

Thank you to everyone who watches my videos, subscribe to my YouTube channel and supports me, it means the world. If you haven't already seen my channel and videos, I've picked out some videos you might enjoy:
